ATLANTIC WEATHER LINKS

THE OCEAN CRUISING CLUB <= /b>is made up of experienced yachtsmen who are always happy= to share their expertise.  Two of= the OCC members who are with us this year, came up with some sources of weather= information that could be useful to any ocean-going or coastal sailor.

 

Thanks to Mike Cobbe of “Kelly’s Eye of Hamble” and David Wilson of “Suerte” for their efforts.

 

1.  The NOAA 4-day report is a satellite picture of the NE Atlantic recent weather systems and how they are moving. It is a sort of synoptic chart movie.=

This NOAA satellite stuff uses Java Runtime. Just load it on your machine a= nd it starts automatically when it sees something that needs Java.  You can get it, free, from their s= ite.

When the NOAA Screen comes up, select the image you want from “VisibleR= 21;, “Infra-red” or “Water Vapour&= #8221;.  If it doesn’t cycle, just cl= ick on the word “Loop”.

2.  The GMDSS Met Area 2 forecasts are by Meteo France. It cov= ers the eastern half of the Atlantic, and is good for folks going ocean sailing, north or south.

3. The Grib.US forecasts are free and use the same GFS d= ata that Windguru uses. You need to register and do= wnload their software, but it's free, too.

 

It has global coverage but if you look at the page, just put your mouse on the world map, hold down the left button and 'draw' the area you want. You= can 'draw' any size you like, e.g. local to Lagos, or (say) here to the Canaries, etc.etc.

 

The default is for five-day forecasts but you can choose seven.  You can also choose your own millibar levels. It is useful for passage planning, starting to look 3 to 4 weeks before leaving to see what the weather patter= ns are.

4. The Passageweather site could also be worth considering, as it is a quick, “cheap and cheerful” way to get an overview of the weather.  It lies somewhere between the simp= licity of Windguru and the complexity of the first thr= ee sites.
